Right Stuff De-Ruster

When it comes to products that stop rust I’m looking for two things, ease of application and certainty in how it works. Right Stuff De-Ruster fits both of those criteria. Developed by Sunbelt Chemicals Corp. in Palm Coast, Florida, where rust is an everyday occurrence, they understand what it takes to stop rust in its tracks.

Right Stuff De-Ruster is a chemical treatment, reacting on existing rust and converting it into iron phosphate. Then, as it cures, it converts the iron phosphate into iron chromo-phosphate. I’m not sure what all that means, but I do know from testing Right Stuff De-Ruster in the shop that what was rust is no longer rust after a treatment.

Something else I like about Right Stuff De-Ruster is that it is available in 32 oz. spray bottles (as well as gallon and five gallon sizes) and the spray bottle makes application a snap. Just spray Right Stuff De-Ruster onto the surface being treated and it cures out and is ready for primer in about two hours.

The applied film leaves the surface slightly tacky, which just happens to be the ideal substrate for accepting primer without having to first sand the surface, and it improves the adherence of the primer at the same time.

What all of that means is that you can brush away the loose rust using a wire brush, apply Right Stuff De-Ruster, wait a couple of hours, and start priming. No additional treating or sanding required.

Do I like it?

Yes, I applied Right Stuff De-Ruster to the rusty rear body panel on a Mustang and have already primed the area withepoxy.
