Disc brakes for a Corvair hot rod

April 1, 2012 | By Richard Prince

Question:

My current hot rod project uses a late (1966) Corvair differential and trans and independent rear suspension with an engine in front of the transmission rather than the stock mounting behind the differential. What disc brakes, possibly from some other GM product, would be a bolt-on or nearly so?

Answer:

I believe that the drum brake setup used on the 1966 Corvairs was essentially the same system used on 1964-72 GM Abody cars, including the Chevrolet Chevelle, Pontiac Le Mans, Buick Skylark and Oldsmobile Cutlass. If you can find a good used disc brake system from any of these you can use it on your hot rod without too much difficulty. Another option is to buy a GM A-body disc brake conversion kit from any of the many vendors who sell such kits.
