Black chrome plating and boosting Cadillac mpg

November 1, 2008 | By Richard Prince

Question:

Who does gunmetal or “black” chrome plating (of alloy wheels)?

Also, I am trying to get more mileage from my 1993 Cadillac DeVille. Does anyone make a free flow intake for the fuel injection (K & N doesn’t)?

I have added a computer chip, and free flow cat and exhaust. It seems to help—highway mileage went from 21 mpg to 24 mpg.

Answer:

There are a lot of plating shops that do black chrome plating of alloy wheels. I don’t have any personal experience with this so I can’t recommend a specific shop to you. If any readers can recommend a plater we will pass that information along.

I am not remotely surprised that nobody makes a high-performance intake manifold for your ’93 Cadillac. After all, how many people would actually buy one? I am, however, surprised— very surprised—that a “computer chip” and free flow exhaust system have yielded a 15% increase in fuel economy.
