Going back to a generator

August 1, 2009 | By Richard Prince

Question:

I’m restoring a 1959 Ford Custom 300 with a 292 cid V-8. The previous owner replaced the generator with an alternator. I’m a bit of a purist, so I want to reinstall a generator. Is it simply a matter of bolting in the generator or are there other issues to consider?

Answer:

What you need to do to convert your Ford back to an original-style generator depends on what was modified to install the alternator. At the very least you’ll have to reconfigure the wiring harness by removing the alternator-compatible connectors and reinstalling the correct connectors for the generator. You’ll also have to reinstall the correct generator brackets.
