Hobby shop paint

Question:

Tom O’Donovan with the Subaru small parts paint problem (August) should consider going to a hobby shop. (The matte silver paint is peeling on his door and console trim.)

A good hobby shop has tons of paint colors in small containers. They stock auto colors in small spray cans. Hobby paint has smaller particles in it and is very suitable for small parts. They should have a product by Floquil called Barrier — this is a primer that actually allows automobile paint to be used on plastic models.

Yow! I just read online that Testors is discontinuing Floquil, but will sell off remaining production. Surely someone will take up the slack.

Answer:

That’s a good suggestion James; especially if you find that your knobs are sensitive to the paint that you would like to use. On the other hand, I have painted plastic knobs and steering wheels on cars using epoxy enamel several times and had no problems.

But as you well know, some plastics are vulnerable to solvents, especially the plastics used for model kits.
