My headlights flicker at low speeds

Question:

I have a 1966 Dodge Coronet 500 with a 440 cid engine and an aftermarket 70amp alternator. At low speed and at idle the headlights flicker. At all other engine speeds the lights are continuously bright. At one time there was a company named “Mopars by Crane,” which made a wiring kit to overcome this flicker problem. Apparently this company no longer exists. Does anyone have a solution?

Answer:

As you’ve already discovered, Mopars by Crane apparently is out of business. However, the light flickering problem you’re experiencing is somewhat common and there are several possible causes. The most likely is weak ground connections. Check both ends of the battery cables to make sure they are secure and corrosion-free. Try adding a heavy braided cable from the firewall to the engine block and see if that solves the problem. Other possible causes are a defective voltage regulator, weak alternator or weak battery.
