You need a booster... and check it carefully

Question:

I have a 1951 Chevy Styleline Deluxe with a 6-volt battery. I was told that if I

purchased an inline voltage reducer that goes into my cigar plug I can run a 12-volt fan to ventilate my car on the inside. I am also interested in putting a 10-blade electric fan in front of my radiator and I was told that it’s a 12-volt fan but it has a voltage booster on it to make it work on a 6volt system. I’m confused—why does one need a booster and the other a reducer?

Answer:

In order to get 6-volts up to 12-volts you need a booster, not a reducer. Most boosters are not intended for high draw items, especially motors, so make sure that the reducer you buy is rated for the use you intend for it.
