You forgot the voltage regulator

November 1, 2009 | By Richard Prince

Question:

In the question by Don Krech in the August issue of Auto Restorer you gave some good advice about reinstalling a generator, but you left out the voltage regulator, an essential part of that charging system. Also, Painless might have the correct harness for that application.

Answer:

A number of readers pointed out this error of omission and we thank you for taking the time to write in.

Yes, as part of his return to an original style generator system Mr. Krech will have to re-install a correct voltage regulator if the original one was removed when his 1959 Ford Custom 300 was converted to an alternator.

Painless Performance Products (painlesswiring.com) can provide a new wiring harness for the charging system if the original one is missing or damaged beyond repair.
