Who uses air-powered sanders?

Question:

Most if not all of the TV shows related to preparing bodies for painting use manual long boards for sanding the guide coat(s). I don’t recall seeing anyone use an air-powered long board. Is this for the show or do high-end paint shops use air-powered sanders?

Answer:

Many high-volume production body shops use air sanders because they are considerably faster and require less manual effort compared with hand sanders. However, the added speed of an air-powered sander is also a danger because even slight lapses in focus can cause big problems. In light of this, air-powered sanders should only be used by highly skilled and thoroughly experienced craftsmen.
