What is causing transmission slippage and chatter in a 1962 Oldsmobile F-85 Cutlass with a F-85 Hydra-Matic transmission?

Question:

I have a 1962 Oldsmobile F-85 Cutlass. The automatic transmission started slipping so I removed it and had it rebuilt with new bands and clutch plates. Unfortunately, it still slips and chatters. The transmission is unique to 1961 through 1963 Oldsmobiles and nobody seems to know much about it. I have books on transmissions, including the one in my car, but they do not include troubleshooting advice. Can you offer some suggestions as to what might cause my transmission to slip and chatter?

Answer:

Your Oldsmobile came equipped with an F-85 Hydra-Matic, a variation on the widely used GM automatic transmission. Factors which can cause or contribute to the problems you are experiencing include the TV linkage (the mechanical linkage on the outside of the transmission housing) being adjusted too long, low oil pressure, restrictions or sticking in the accumulator parts, stuck valves in the control-valve assembly, obstructions in oil passages, a front clutch that is slipping or has an incorrect number of plates, and slipping bands. Your automatic transmission shop manual should describe how to diagnose and repair the above problems and will be a valuable resource if you intend to tackle the project yourself. If you prefer to turn the repair over to a professional, I am certain you can find someone in your area who is experienced with F-85 Hydra-Matics. You should try asking for a recommendation among fellow Oldsmobile enthusiasts who live nearby (attend some car shows or join a local car club to meet fellow enthusiasts.)
