Question:

What is an affordable cleaning solvent for classic car restoration:

Answer:

I have been using K-1 kerosene with GUNK SC for many years. It cleans well, has a high flash point, is not expensive, and the Gunk SC enables residue to be washed off with water so parts can be painted if desired. Always wear appropriate gloves when washing parts with solvents—they will absorb into your skin very quickly (and the odor isn’t pleasant either).

As I said back in June: In these litigious times I hesitate to recommend that anyone use anything that is toxic, environmentally unfriendly or flammable, and that includes kerosene. As for using it and Gunk for cleaning parts, that works well, but you said it, I didn't.
