The distributor on my MGB keeps giving me issues after being fixed multiple times, what can I do to fix it?

Question:

l have had a 1978 MGB since 1981 and have had nothing but trouble with the distributor. I love the car, but am almost ready to give up on it. I have had the distributor rebuilt three times and replaced twice over the years. It works fine for a little while and then acts up again. Several people familiar with MGs have told me these distributors were bad when they were new and only get worse with time. Is there anything I can do short of selling my car?

Answer:

I'll refrain from any British electronics bashing and simply say that the distributor in your car was made by Lucas and you are not alone in the problems you have experienced. Look to Moss Motors for a completely self-contained replacement electronic ignition distributor they sell. I am told it is superior to the original Lucas unit that came in your car.
