Some windshield gasket sources

Question:

I have a 1967 Dodge Dart, which is my principal car in the summer months. When I restored it, the old windshield seal was disintegrated and needed to be replaced. The windshield itself is still very usable and is in the car right now. I have purchased two replacement seals and neither one is really right. The first one did not fit at all and the second one fits better but it’s still not right. I have purchased a chrome seal to go around the rubber seal but that is not original. Can I purchase the original seals and, if so, from where?

Answer:

I could not locate a source for an exact, factory reproduction windshield weatherstrip for your 1967 Dart. If you saved the deteriorated original seal you can use it to find a close replacement.

If you’re ambitious and have a lot of money to spare, you can have the original weatherstrip reproduced by a specialist such as Steele Rubber Products steelrubber.com).

Another option that some have successfully employed when a good replacement gasket is not available is to use windshield urethane (the same adhesive/sealant used on new vehicles) to “form” a gasket.

Another possibility (albeit not an easy one) is to try to locate a good used gasket from a salvage yard.
