Should I upgrade to a breakerless ignition system?

Question:

I have seen advertisements for breakerless ignitions and am considering installing one in my 1963 Thunderbird. The car is a daily driver so I am not concerned with minor alterations to originality. I want to make my car as trouble-free as possible and am wondering if a breakerless ignition is worth the trouble, and if so, which system is the best.

Answer:

l have installed quite a few of these aftermarket systems and have had no problems with them. They offer increased performance and, unlike breaker points, they don’t need to be adjusted or replaced periodically. If increased performance and decreased maintenance is your goal, I highly recommend converting. If reliability is your only concern, I would stick with the stock ignition system. The breakerless conversions are extremely reliable, but stock breaker points are also extremely reliable. If you decide to convert your ignition system, I recommend using the kit manufactured by Mallory. You can buy the kit you need (part #502) from any parts store or mail order business that carries Mallory products.
