Removing reddish residue from a carb

September 1, 2017 | By Staff

Question:

My 1964 Pontiac GTO Tri-power convertible is restored, but when I drive it to shows, the carburetors sweat fuel which discolors them and makes them look terrible. Is there a way to get that reddish varnish off without removing the carbs?

Answer:

That is an easy one Ed. Just get a small stiff brush and a little lacquer thinner and scrub the carb, and then wipe off the residue with a rag. Be careful not to get spatters all over everything else though, because they can be nearly impossible to remove.
