Problems with a Maverick parking brake

August 1, 2012 | By Richard Prince

Question:

I am at my wits’ end. I have a 1933 Chevy Master with a 1974 Ford Maverick rear end (that’s my best guess from the tag on the rear end). I am trying to install a parking brake but the lever, link and spring are missing. No problem, I thought. I’ll search the Internet and pick the one I want. To my surprise the search ended up with zero. I cannot find any source for these parts. I guess they never go bad. It seems that the Mavericks and Comets had 10” brakes and everybody else had another size. The width of the drum affects the length of the lever. Do you know of any sources for these parts? The Lokar Parking handle really looks great. I bought the car half finished. The outside looks great and the wife and I are finishing the inside. She can do wonders with a sewing machine.

Answer:

The parts you seek are no longer available new so your only option is to find used originals. There’s no shortage of suppliers who specialize in Maverick and Comet parts so I’m confident that you’ll eventually find what you need but it may take quite a bit of legwork. Try the Maverick Connection, one of the larger Maverick parts sellers. If that doesn’t solve your problem, scout some more on eBay.
