My chromed plastic has peeled

October 1, 2009 | By Richard Prince

Question:

I’ve been working on my dash panel before installing it back into my 1968 Torino ragtop and there is chromed plastic that has peeled badly.

I cleaned up the surface and sprayed it with Duplicolor “chrome” paint. It looks better but still looks like what it is, namely spray paint.

Are there any better ways out there? I was thinking that since it’s paint, I could try some rubbing compound to improve the finish.

Answer:

For true OEM (or better) results you can send your dash panel to a competent plastic chrome specialist.

If you don’t want to do that, then consider trying a different brand of chromepaint, such as the version offered by ALCLAD II (alclad2.com).

I have never tried buffing or otherwise massaging chrome paint to try to get it to look better but you really have nothing to lose by trying it. Spray the paint on a piece of scrap plastic and give it a go.
