Keeping rust off your drums

Question:

I am currently working on the brakes on my ’38 Chevy. Is there a way to keep rust from forming on the newly turned drums while I am working on the rest of the car?

Answer:

The best solution I know of — no pun intended — is to coat the contact surfaces of the drums with shellac. It is alcohol-based, so it won’t leave any oily residue that could damage brake linings, but it will protect the surfaces from corrosion until you are ready to install your drums. You can find shellac at paint stores as well as hardware outlets. Just remove the shellac completely with alcohol-based thinner made for the purpose before installing your drums.

Another trick is to wrap the drums with several layers of clear kitchen wrap so no air or moisture can get to them. This will require a plethora of Saran Wrap, but it will do the trick. By the way, good luck explaining to your spouse why you used all of her sandwich wrap on some old car parts.
