Information on Lozier cars

February 1, 1997 | By Richard Prince

Question:

The first car in my family was a 1909 Lozier purchased new by my grandfather. It remained in the family until my mother sold it for a couple of hundred dollars in the late 1940s or early 1950s. I remember the car as being immense and beautiful and would love to buy one today. I have never owned a pre-WWI car and know little about this make. Can you give me some information about Loziers and tell me where I might locate one for sale?

Answer:

Loziers, manufactured between 1904 and approximately 1918, were indeed immense and beautiful. The quality of their engineering, materials and construction was among the finest in the world and their cost reflected this. In 1909, for example, a Lozier cost between $6000 and $7850, roughly three times the cost of an average new home. Racing played no small part in creating Lozier’s reputation. Between 1907 and 1911, Loziers set numerous speed and endurance records and finished first in more than 60 percent of the races entered. Buying a Lozier today is a formidable task since only about two dozen are believed to survive. Good starting points for purchasing a Lozier are joining the Antique Automobile Club of America (717-534-1910) and watching the “pre-1916 vehicles for sale” section in Hemmings.
