Question:

I have a 1970 Chevy Nova with a 350 V-8 and a four-barrel carb. When I changed the oil I noticed a very strong odor of gasoline in the oil. How could gas get in the oil?

Answer:

The gas probably is there because of a malfunctioning carburetor. If the carb is dumping an excess amount of gas into the engine, the unburned gas can run down the cylinder walls and into the oil pan. You may have a bad float or needle and seat assembly. Another possibility is a bad fuel pump. It’s possible that the pump diaphragm is ruptured and leaking into the engine.
