How should I repair my exhaust manifold or should I replace it with headers?

Question:

l own a 1964 Ford F-100 with a 292-cubic-inch V-8. One of the exhaust manifolds is cracked in two places. I had it welded with nickel, but it cracked again. Is there a better way to repair the manifold or should I install headers? Does anyone make headers for my truck? Also, where might I find an electronic ignition for my truck? I would appreciate any advice as this is my only vehicle and a daily driver.

Answer:

Welding cast iron is an art unto itself. I have seen many cracked and broken cast iron parts ruined by well-intentioned, but incapable, welders. One company that I have had excellent results with is High Speed Salvage in Central Islip, New York (on Long Island), 516-348-7070. I could not locate a listing for headers for this truck; my books all show headers for 65 and newer trucks. As for an electronic ignition system, Mallory makes a kit that converts the existing stock Ford distributor (Mallory part #502). If you want to replace the entire stock Ford system with an aftermarket electronic system, all the major ignition parts companies (Accel, Mallory, MSD, etc.) can provide it.
