How can I get my classic car to pass the tight smog laws in California?

Question:

With tightening emissions laws in California I’ve become concerned about two of my cars, a 1970 Porsche 911 and 1968 Maserati, passing smog. They both currently pass and run very well, but who knows what restrictions may come down the line? Is it feasible to retrofit catalysts on these cars? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:

You can retrofit a performance-oriented aftermarket catalyst such as Dynomax’s “Super Converter” without adversely affecting your car’s performance, but I don’t think this will become necessary. In virtually all jurisdictions, including California, there is a wide disparity between the levels of pollutants that are permitted for vintage cars and the levels that are emitted by vintage car engines that are in optimum operating condition. Even if permitted pollutant levels are drastically reduced, your cars should still pass provided their engines are in excellent condition. If the engines are not in optimum condition, perhaps because they have high miles and are burning a little oil or are experiencing a little bit of blow by, you may be compelled to rehabilitate them before they will pass stricter emissions standards.
