Gas keeps leaking from carburetor on my Jeep CJ5 with a Carter YF carburetor

Question:

l recently purchased a 1965 Jeep CJ5 that was in prolonged storage. It has a 4-cylinder “Hurricane” engine with a Carter YF carburetor. The engine runs well, but each time I turn the Jeep to the right or left I smell gasoline and I can actually see the gas run out along the carburetor’s pump lifter link. I have rebuilt the carburetor and readjusted the float to spec. It seems to spill less gas, but spills some nonetheless.

Answer:

The Carter YF carburetor was used on many different cars in the 1960s and was generally quite reliable. The problem you are experiencing is probably due to an incorrectly adjusted carburetor pump. To adjust the pump, seat the throttle valve in the bore of the carburetor and press down on the upper end of the diaphragm shaft until it reaches its bottom position. The metering rod arm should contact the pump lifter link at the outer end nearest the springs. Make any necessary adjustments by bending the pump connector link at its lower angle until you have achieved proper contact between the metering rod arm and pump lifter link.
