From a mesh to a paper air filter

July 1, 2009 | By Richard Prince

Question:

I wanted to find an air filter to replace the mesh filter on my 1951 Chevy Styleline Deluxe with a 216 cid engine. As you know, the mesh filters must be cleaned and oiled regularly. After checking around at all of the parts stores to no avail, I ran into a very knowledgeable parts guy at a NAPA store who solved my problem. They carry a filter (part number 7-02247) for power equipment and marine products that will fit a Chevy 216 if you get a 10-24 or 10-32 coupling nut extender and a screw to fit in place of the wing nut. I wanted to keep my engine and components looking original and I believe the paper filter will do this at the same time it filters better than the original mesh filter. And the paper filter doesn’t have to be cleaned and oiled periodically.

On another topic, do you know of anyone in Ohio who still does whitewall enlarging like they did years ago, where they buff the black rubber off?

Answer:

Thank you for the information about adapting a paper element air filter to your vintage Chevy engine. Maybe another reader will recommend someone in Ohio who can modify your tires to give them oversize whitewalls.
