Caring for your leather

Question:

Can you give me the brand name and location of a supplier of a hydrating dressing for leather?

If my leather is not already cracked should I use the product anyway? My leather has been exposed to lots of hot and cold in my attic and I’m almost afraid to look!

Answer:

There is an endless array of leather conditioning products out there.

Consider using HarnessHoney, available exclusively from Carousel Farm (www.carouselfarm.com, 304-7253909), Zymol Treat Leather Conditioner (part #YML301), or Lexol 1015 Leather Conditioner.

Zymol and Lexol products are available from a large number of sources, including amazon.com and many local retailers throughout the country.

Regardless of which product you choose, it is important to follow the manufacturer’s directions very carefully.

It is also highly advisable to try the product on a discreet area of your leather to test its effectiveness and to make sure it does not discolor the leather in an objectionable way.

It is common for leather conditioners to slightly darken the color of the leather when it is applied.

Before your leather cracks is the best time to use a high-quality conditioner. Once the leather has dried to the point where it cracks, the application of conditioning products will help prevent additional damage from occurring but they will not repair the cracks that have already formed.
