Question:

l am adding turn signals to my 1949 Ford F-1 pickup and need an add-on switch for the steering column that is able to stop the brake lights while the turn signal is on. Can you help me?

Answer:

Signal Stat makes a kit to add turn signals to vehicles that did not originally come with them. The kit includes a steering column-mounted switch, wiring and instructions. The kit is available from B&R Performance Parts, Inc.; 516/248-7380. The installation of a turn signal add-on kit generally requires few modifications to a vehicle. The signal lever itself usually attaches to the steering column with clamps that resemble hose clamps. The kit’s wiring harness requires power from the vehicle (normally from the fuse panel) and you must run wires through a flasher (which you must mount under the dash) and to the tail-lamps as well as the front parking lamps, if your vehicle is so equipped. The brake light wires must be routed through the signal harness so the brake lights work in concert with the signal lights (the brake light is over-ridden when the signal is activated). I would estimate three to five hours for a complete installation.
