A couple of grommet sources

November 1, 2008 | By Richard Prince

Question:

I have a 1963 Nova with the original 194 cid inline 6-cylinder engine and 3speed transmission with column shifter. There are tons of Nova parts suppliers but I have not been able to locate shift rod grommets for the “three on the tree” linkage. This seems to be a Nova-only part. The grommets from other Chevy models are not the same as those on the Nova. Any help finding the Nova grommets would be appreciated.

Answer:

As you have already discovered, nobody is reproducing the correct grommets for your now rare column-mounted three-speed shifter. Your best hope is to match your original grommets to equivalent ones that are currently being produced. One way to do this is to determine the dimensions of the grommets you need and then contact a grommet maker, such as Allstates Rubber & Tool, Inc. (www.allstatesrubber.com) or Minor Rubber Co. Inc. (www.minorrubber.com).
