A 700 R4 vs. a Powerglide

May 1, 2008 | By Richard Prince

Question:

I am updating the drive train in a 1950 Chevy pickup. I have an early 250 cid L6 engine with an aluminum Powerglide. I also have a 700 R4 transmission. I would appreciate your comments regarding the use of the 700 R4 with an aftermarket non-computer modification instead of the Powerglide.

Answer:

You will be much better off using the 700 R4 automatic instead of the Power- glide. Compared with the two-speed Powerglide, the four-speed 700 R4 will offer better acceleration, lower rpm highway cruising and improved fuel economy.
